Effect of Mg^(2+) on the V. vulnif cus cytolysin-induced hemolysis

Abstract
Effect of Mg2+ on the hemolytic of mouse erythrocytes induced by the cytolysis produced from Vibrio vulnificus was investigated.
1. Divalent cat ions including Mg 2, protected mouse erythrocytes from hemolytic caused by cytolysis, whereas the monovalent cautions showed no protective effects.
2. The protective effect of Mgt+ on the cytolysis-induced hemolytic was exerted in mill molar concentrations with maxim¡í4 at 25 mM and IC5o was 4.808¡¾0.273 mM. The protection was not absolute and could be overcome by increasing the concentrations of cytolysis. In the presence of 25 mM MgC12, the mouse erythrocytes were about 10 folds more resistant to hemolytic than the control.
3. Pretreatment of mouse erythrocytes with Mg 2+ showed no effect on cytolysis-induced hemolytic. Mg 2+ did not block the binding of cytolysis to mouse erythrocytes, the pore formation and the release of potassium. Since the three steps of the hemolytic by performing toxins are known as: i) binding to cell membrane, ii) formation of Tran membrane pore, and iii) cell lyses, the protective effect of Mgt+ seemed to be exerted on the final step.
